Gorgeous photos!John Rosenthal's photographs are breathtaking. While the photograph pictured on the cover is incredible, there are countless photos inside featuring people. John has a knack for catching the most extraordinary facial expressions, truly capturing the energy and essence of a moment. I highly reccommend this book for any black and white photography buff.

Roadside Geology of Pennsylvania (Roadside Geology Series)
Published in Paperback by Mountain Press Publishing Company (June, 2003)
Average review score:

Geology is funSince my husband and I were going to be spending a week in Pennsylvania, I brought the Roadside Geology book of PA along. I was interested in understanding the local geology and was happy to discover three fossil sites within the area we stayed. I was able to look at a Triassic fossil dinosaur footprint at one site and find some Devonian fossils in another. The Roadside Geology book is great for someone who only has a short period of time to explore a particular area. I hope they'll put one out for every state (particularly Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia...hint hint hint.)

Roadside New Jersey
Published in Paperback by Rutgers University Press (January, 2003)

Fun and fascinating nostalgiaWhen I first found this book on the shelf of a local bookstore and thumbed through it, gazing at the many photos, I was astounded by how many things I recognized. Then I found some sites from my very own hometown and was delighted. However, I knew I had to have the book when I found a chapter devoted to a local woman who has milkjugs all over her lawn. For years, we have driven by the house and a few friends and I have puzzled over her milk jug creations (an American Flag, Mickey Mouse, Santa Clause among others). The chapter explained how she started this strange habit. There are plenty of great little anecdotes. I recommend the book to anyone who likes to look at Americana, from classic diners to goofy signs and such, and especially to the denizens of New Jersey (prepare to be surprised by how many of these things you've seen before!

I love this book! This book was extremly enjoyable to read. Cutis Badger opens his heart in several chapters, speaking of his love for his son and his love for the land he was raised on. The illistrations are also amazing, and offer a lot of emotional feeling. This book is also informative, and includes interesting knowledge about the marshes and creeks enjoys.

Sanctuary (Creating the North American Landscape)
Published in Hardcover by Johns Hopkins Univ Pr (July, 2002)
Average review score:

Contrasting images of different religious faithsThe title of Sanctuary refers to a place of worship and also a state of mind: Thomas Roma places these in visual perspective, locating sacred parts of the community within the Brooklyn area and charting the efforts of generations to leave their mark. His excellent black and white photos pack in contrasting images of different religious faiths and sanctuaries.

Seeing New York: History Walks for Armchair and Footloose Travelers (Critical Perspectives on the Past)
Published in Paperback by Temple Univ Press (April, 1995)
Average review score:

interesting subject; interesting writerThis book is a very interesting exploration of old New York, written by an interesting woman, Hope Cooke, who among other things was married to the prince of Sikkim, and (enjoyed?) much publicity in the 60's. I read her autobiography after reading this, but actually, she come across as being much more interesting in this scholarly book. I wish she would write more on the subject of old New York.
